A poet was born
You smiled and said “Thank you!”
And all my worries were gone…
Our eyes met, they were meant to,
And thus, a poet was born.
My mind told me “it is just a fallacy”,
But my heart told me to go on.
I just pictured us being together,
That is when a poet was born.
The picture was too vague, too obscure,
But I craved for you somewhere deep down.
This craving became acute with time
No wonder a poet was born!
I kept asking myself “Is he the one?”
“If he left you, would you ever mourn?”
The very thought of it made me tremble.
In that moment, a poet was born.
I longed for you every moment by then
From one dawn to another dawn.
Time was slowly crawling by
With which, a poet was born
‘My words would fail me’, I had this feeling.
“What if it all goes wrong!”
But I had to tell you, anyhow.
And for that, a poet was born.
I finally put my words to test
And waited eagerly for you to reckon.
My mind went numb, I doubted myself
If at all, a poet was born!
“I waited for this moment,
I waited too bad and for too long…”
You embraced me saying this, and I was sure
For you, this poet was born!!!
A kid, i know
Much before that, he had learnt to talk,
To talk of things, things one would not notice.
He was an expert at it, he was no novice.
“Mama, where did you find me?” “I asked God for you.”
“Had you asked earlier, I would have seen your marriage too.”
No, it wasn’t funny. They were in a party then.
No replies. He got irritated. He said it over again.
“Your dad and I had to ask together. I’m really sorry son!”
“Miss Smith loves her son better, she asked for him alone.”
Miss Smith, a single mother and his mother’s childhood friend,
Rose from her seat in fury and was just about to vent
When suddenly, this kid I know, ran and hugged her tight.
“Please, adopt me miss, I will love you day and night.
You are stern but compassionate, that I can clearly see.
You are the best mom I’ve ever known, a better one is yet to be.
You raised your son alone, he tops in our class too.
He’s the luckiest son on this planet, because his mom is you.”
This was the first time that she had been appreciated,
Instead of being mocked and blamed. She was very elated.
This kid, I know, won her over with his thoughts and words,
Words of wisdom, which to even the wisest had not occurred.
This kid, I know, cured one more heart, a heart which had a block.
I wish I knew to do this too, to talk the way this kid I know, could talk!
Mother, i seek you
And never did you complain about those extra pounds.
I felt protected in my little world inside you,
When you sang to me. Oh! The most beautiful sound!
I entered this world with eyes full of tears.
You wiped them off and kissed me on my head.
That was my first encounter with you, mother.
I smiled, you smiled back and made your arms my bed.
I slept in there, it was warm and cozy.
You caressed my head as I dreamt of something surreal.
Tears rolled down your cheeks, of joy I supposed,
As I lay oblivion to what was in store, what was real!
I woke up to see myself surrounded by alien fragrance.
I seeked only for you, only for your smell, mother.
But you were not around to be seen or felt or found.
And I could see that no one would even bother.
Days passed by, and I still longed for your touch,
A peck on my cheek, or atleast a warm hug.
Why weren’t you with me, was I so uninvited?!
Melancholy filled me up, you were my only drug.
I am six now, and am lovely enough, mother.
I am daddy’s princess, searching for my queen.
I faintly remember your face, no picture of you do I have.
No glimpse of you, nothing at all, and six years it has already been.
“It is time my child, for me to tell you the fact”
Says daddy, when at ten, I ask for you again.
“Do you see the brightest star up there, my princess?”
“That is not my mother, I always ask you in vain!”
I glared and cried and left the room at once.
Why can’t anyone tell me the truth as it is!
By now, I have realized, you’ve left to never come back.
But I still desire your warmth, your hug, your kiss…
He did not come!
It was my first day at school, I was scared and way too nervous.
The building was too tall and the playground, absolutely hideous.
Nothing looked too alluring, neither trees, nor those birds,
Caged, helpless they seemed. Their pleas went unheard.
I clung to your hand, I was afraid to ever let go,
To be here on my own, with people I didn’t even know.
And there were things on my mind, apart from our separation.
I had a feeling too bad, some kind of premonition.
The bell rang, I snuggled up to you. You patted me gently on my back.
“Time for class. Come on, kid”, said a man dressed in white and black.
So you pushed me away gently, my first lesson awaited me.
But more than anywhere else in this world, in your lap I wanted to be.
You bid me good bye with the biggest smile on your face.
I stared at you leaving. I wanted your embrace.
I was moving towards my class, but my heart stayed back with you.
I entered a room full of colors, and all I could feel was blue.
Kids, dressed alike, laughed and played, but were no help to my distress.
i found no fun, no urge to learn, rhymes being recited by the mistress.
Finally, the school was out, and I waited for you with a smile.
With a bag heavier than myself, I had waited for quite a while.
You did not show up, daddy. You promised, at one, you would.
I looked for your car everywhere, I tried the best I could.
I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to see if it were you.
You had sent aunt Geeta for me, too strange for me to be true.
“Where is Daddy waiting for us? Is he stuck in the traffic somewhere?”
“We’ll go in my car, Disha.” “So now Daddy doesn’t even care!”
She did not speak a word. Neither did she look me in the eyes.
“Can you make a call to my Dad?” And all I could hear were sighs.
My heart sank, even skipped a few beats. It was the fear of the unknown.
It had been silent for long, suffocating it was, to be with someone, yet alone.
We reached my home in an hour. Still no words, no clues.
She escorted me inside, hand in hand, so tight, they could almost fuse.
“Mommy, I am tired and hungry,” saying so, I ran into her arms.
She faked a smile, she’s bad at it. Her face had lost all charm.
“Why did not daddy pick me up?” A question I wish she had not answered.
“He won’t ever, my child, not in this life.” A truth which could no more be altered.
Men with guns, unlicensed and lethal, had done their job well, again.
One more child rendered fatherless, few more hearts cried in pain!
Like music and lyrics...
Surrounded by kids, I was seated in my chair
In a class of twenty, as a teacher I was there.
Amid the entire bustle, I heard a little girl cry
With a paper in her hand, she stood very nearby.
Her cheeks red, her eyes tearful, she looked cute though.
“Ma’am, I found this in my bag, a few minutes ago ,”
She said, still crying, and held out the note in her hand.
Must be a prank, I thought to myself, nothing too grand.
To my surprise, it was a poem, written in color red,
Tiny little red hearts everywhere, this is how it read:
Suzie dear, Jimmy here.
Jimmy first poem, do not tear.
Jimmy like Suzie, Jimmy like Suzie smile.
Jimmy like sit Suzie side, Jimmy like Suzie style.
Jimmy see Suzie walk, just love Suzie talk.
Jimmy best friend Suzie, Jimmy gift Suzie red frock.
Red = love, Jimmy hear on TV often.
Jimmy ask Suzie, please be my girlfriend.
Jimmy keep Suzie happy, never make her cry.
If Suzie marry Jimmy, Jimmy never say good bye.
Jimmy plan future, two kids, a boy and a girl.
Handsome boy name Daniel, pretty girl name Pearl.
Jimmy buy Suzie a bungalow, somewhere in Paris.
Paris city of love. Under the long tower, we kiss.
Suzie keep mom-dad too, Jimmy give Suzie joy.
Jimmy take care girl, Suzie take care boy.
Jimmy no money now, Jimmy study hard and work.
Jimmy buy Suzie diamond ring, and her favorite Cadbury Perk.
Please Suzie say yes, Suzie not say no.
If Suzie not answer, Jimmy home not go.
I read it over and over again, it really touched my heart
The loveliest of all the letters, the sweetest one so far.
Today, I stand in their marriage ceremony, recollecting the past
His words were not shallow, he was marrying her at last.
He did just as he had promised, a bungalow and a red dress,
A business firm in Paris, and he still wrote poems for his princess.
His eyes still sparkle at the very sight her,
If one says this is not love, then I beg to differ.
She is dressed in a gown, white and magnificent.
He is dressed in a suit, perfect black and decent,
He bends on his knees, and takes her hand in his.
“Accept this diamond ring and be mine forever miss!”
She jumps with pleasure, she feels a thrill
“You had promised in the letter, you remember still!”
Of course he does, those words were genuine after all.
Applauses and sighs of awe filled up the entire hall.
Processional, wedding march, exchange of rings,
As the affair continues, the wedding bell dings!
The priest declares, "the groom may now kiss the bride.”
They kiss each other softly, two souls are being allied.
I stand at the church gate as they walk away together.
She smiles and tosses the bouquet in the air behind her.
Her left hand in his right hand, too perfect a view,
Like music and lyrics, they were made for each other too!
